Blocked Drains Wahroonga

The name means "our home" in the local Aboriginal language, and this suburb has held onto that settled, established feel since its peak building years in the 1920s and 1930s.

Federation, Arts and Crafts and Colonial Revival houses line the streets on the southern side, the older half of the suburb closest to the railway corridor.

Water Street and Burns Road are typical of that stretch: big blocks, original brick, and drainage laid before anyone thought about what the trees above them would grow into.

That's the north shore's usual root problem, but here it comes with a second layer.

The stormwater network on the ridge falls away sharply toward the surrounding gullies, so a heavy storm doesn't just test the pipes, it tests how fast they can shed the volume before it backs up.

Add decades-old mains under those rail-side streets and you get two failure points working against each other: roots narrowing the pipe, and pressure from above trying to force water through what's left.

A CCTV drain camera confirms which one's driving a given blockage before anyone lifts a shovel, because guessing on a rail-corridor property usually means digging in the wrong spot first.

It's the same pattern around Redleaf Avenue and the shops beside the station, older commercial drains under a retail strip that's been trading since well before anyone considered pipe capacity.

Further south-west toward the hospital precinct on Fox Valley Road, the mix shifts to newer villas and units, so we see fewer root jobs and more shared-line stoppages instead.

Two more issues turn up on repeat, tied to the same older housing stock.

Clay pipe drainage. Federation and interwar houses commonly still run original vitrified clay, prone to cracking at the joint and letting roots and silt in.

Stormwater overload. The big blocks here carry large roof and paved areas, and all that runoff funnels into older stormwater pipes that were never sized for it during an intense downpour.

Both point the same direction: this suburb's housing stock is old enough that the original pipework is doing more than it was ever built for.
