Blocked Drains in St Ives, Cleared Properly

St Ives spent most of its life as rural land before a 1959 rezoning turned it into a dormitory suburb almost overnight.

That single decision shaped everything that followed. Detached brick houses went up fast through the 1960s and 1970s to fill the new blocks, followed by later unit and townhouse infill once the local centre matured.

Most of that housing stock still sits on its original underground pipework.

The commercial heart of that growth sits on Mona Vale Road, where St Ives Shopping Village has anchored the suburb since the 1960s with well over a hundred stores under one roof.

Just as central to the suburb's identity is the Showground further along the same road, Ku-ring-gai's biggest events and recreation site, built on a shale ridge that caps the whole area.

Underneath both the shops and the surrounding streets, the pipework matches the build era exactly: earthenware sewer lines laid in short, jointed lengths, the standard material of that post-war residential push.

Those joints are the weak point today. A jointed clay pipe from a fast mid-century build fails easily enough, given the decades and the root pressure that builds at each seam.

Rosedale Road runs close by the Dalrymple-Hay bushland remnant, and properties along that stretch see roots working into old joints earlier than blocks further from the tree line.

We read the era before we read the pipe. Knowing a property went up in that post-war rush tells us roughly what's underground before the camera even goes in.
